Taiji (Tai chi) – Christopher Shaw

Taiji (Tai chi)

What is tai chi?
Tai chi (taiji) is an ancient movement practice that develops centeredness, and fosters a connection to the deeper part of our being normally obscured by outer sensations and surface thoughts.
Taiji translates as ‘grand ultimate’, similarly Yoga translates as ‘union’ with what is.   Taiji practice is Taoist philosophy in motion.

What are the benefits?
The result on a ‘physical level’ is deep relaxation, increased body and mental heath and improved immune response.
The result on the non physical level is to cultivate the landscape of the heart, develop a connection to the heart/deep mind.

How is tai chi different to other exercise?
Through concentration on the subtle movements of the body we start to calm the nervous system. The surface mind loosens its
grip on our attention and we are able to access the deeper mind. In this deeper state tai chi is practiced.
Aerobic exercise activates the nervous system, increases heart rate and tightens muscles. Tai chi works differently.

Is tai chi for old people?
Because of the heath benefits tai chi has been promoted as a safe exercise that older people can enjoy.  However Tai chi is
traditionally practiced by all ages, young and old, the earlier you begin, the more experience can be gathered.

What style is it
Christopher teaches Patrick Kelly’s system of Taiji, he is currently being generously supported in his development by Patrick’s
students  Jean and Dave Haines in Wigton.
